Photos Talk - Team JRunning @ RU2

Thanks to Unilab and Runrio for the photos and a great race!

Socks matter

A few months ago I was privileged for being invited in a product launch of Thorlos socks. Probably one of the best part of being invited to such events was that you get to test the product or get them for free. In the case of Thorlos, they gave each of the bloggers 2 pairs of socks, a trouser socks and a running socks.

During the Thorlos blogger's night

Having known the value of having a very good pair of socks for running, I intentionally limited the use of my free Thorlos socks to more important races/events.

On the casual socks
One of my tasks in our agency is to video document projects and events in our office or in the field. Just last year, we unveiled the marker of the Station Balanacan in Mogpog, Marinduque.

the station marker
The station is the first Geodetic Control Point in the country established in 1911 which is also referred to as the Luzon Datum. It was situated on top of the highest peak in Marinduque. Early this year, we inspected the site for new developments introduced in the area by the local government of Marinduque.

Our team
Having been there several times I knew that we will be in for a long hike going on top of the mountain. I decided to use my Thorlos trouser socks for a test.

It may not be appropriate, but I still insisted on using it. I used it with an ordinary rubber shoes.

with tripod and video camera on our way up to the station
It was a steep climb to the top and I had a great time with my Thorlos which spared me from blisters from the long hike. The socks perfectly fit my feet which made me more comfortable.

On the running socks
I used my first pair of Thorlos running socks at least twice on my short training runs prior to the Run United 2 just to break it in. Team JRunning was registered in the 21K and wearing the right socks and shoes would definitely be a must for the distance category. It was raining when we started at the BGC going to SM MOA and most runners would agree that wearing wet socks would most certainly cause blisters. Contrary to this belief, Thorlos saved me from such an ordeal. I felt drier throughout the race.

@ RU2, 2012
The same with the trouser socks, the running socks perfectly hugs my feet which gave me comfort as if I was wearing nothing. The padding, especially on the heel part, gave a good cushion on my heel as I did more walk (which forced you to make a heel strike compared to a mid-foot strike while running) during the race.

Overall, Thorlos socks performed highly exceptional. The cost may be a bit more expensive as compared to other regular socks but it really does give more benefit and comfort. We call this value for money. Swthrt and I want to buy more Thorlos socks as we are planning to run more races as much as we can in our lifetime.

My GERD and running

In my previous post, I mentioned about me having Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD or acid reflux, is a condition in which the acidified liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up or refluxes) into the esophagus.

I have tried to run several times around our village and have continued to experience chest pain that hinders me to run continuously. The burning sensation on my chest even radiates to my back and shoulders. I also felt some numbness on my head. It was really frustrating that I cannot even sustain a 500m continuous run. I just have to be contented in doing a brisk walk. In this manner I reduced the tightness that I felt in my chest. Have anyone of you experienced the same?

Last Saturday, 12 May 2012, I finally consulted a Gastroenterologist for medical intervention. I am now on my third day of taking Omeprazole daily 30 min to an hour before breakfast to control the acid reflux from my stomach. I will be taking this for at least a month before going back to my doctor. And as the doctor says, if symptoms persist endoscopy will be needed.  There’s also some diet restriction which includes tomato based foods, citrus fruits, chocolates and most especially coffee.  Eating small frequent meals is also suggested.

Hopefully, my conditions will be better in time for the Unilab Run United 2 which will be held on June 17 at SM Mall of Asia. Swthrt and I will run the 21K category which starts at the Bonofacio Global City and ends in SM MOA.

See you guys this coming June for the 2nd leg of the Run United Series!

JRunning solo @ BHS

Last night, I had a chance to run at BHS while waiting for Swthrt to finish her work. It was not that easy especially at the start. There was a strong temptation to stay at the Customer Lounge of Honda and just  watch TV. It’s  great to sit back and relax since Josh and I just have a hearty meal at Market Market where I also bought myself a guitar tuner. Josh was also pleading me to go with him at BHS Timezone. The only saving grace which push me to run was the constant greetings of the security guards at Honda who knew that Swthrt and I run regularly, “Good evening sir, di ka ba tatakbo?” Isn’t  that a great way to remind me that I have to run. Swthrt also knew that I was going to run, so at around 6:45 pm I got myself ready. It’s always been hard for me to start a run. I need some time for my body to warm up and adjust to the stress brought about by running. I also prefer an early morning run rather than a night run. It’s been a long time since I ran around BHS. The number of runners have increased dramatically since then. There was also a running clinic by Milo Apex being held last night and I also noticed a group of runners assembled near ROX probably getting ready for a group run. After running a couple of rounds, I was missing my running mate Swthrt who really wanted to run but was tied with work. It’s a boring run without her. We have been used to running together in races and in trainings that we enjoy every minute of it. It was a great bonding moment for us. We talk anything and everything. Anyway, we are looking forward to our long run this Saturday.  I finished my run after 5 rounds at the BHS and returned back to Honda.

How about you? What do you prefer, an early morning or a night run? Do you like to run alone or with a partner or group?

Keep on running runners!

Have a great run or race this weekend!

Yamaha Run 2011 Recap

The experience we have at the Yamaha Run for Heroes was no different from the other 21K races we participated in lately. Though we were blessed with a fine weather, it was quite humid and hot. Again, we started slow trying to keep a constant pace. We wanted to run without pressure of setting a PR but keeping in mind that we are dedicating the run to our personal hero Ninong Nomer. The familiarity with the area in Fort Bonifacio and Makati also helped in eased our tensions. It was a great run even though we finished (2:51:14) a little slower than our usual finishing time for this category.  Congratulations to Yamaha Motors Philippines for helping the families of our gallant soldiers through this charity run, and to Runrio for another well-organized race!
