TAKE ACTION

“Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” James 1:22

Coaches are teachers. Their job is to instruct players. Great coaches work hard to prepare their players for competition. They study their opponent, and come up with a game plan to produce the best possible outcome. Great coaches are constantly looking for ways to improve. But for all the hard work and effort great coaches give, it’s meaningless if their athletes don’t respond.

Imagine a coach doing his or her best to teach the team, prepare them for competition and then once the athletes got in the game, they all decided not to do what they had been taught. The coach would be upset and the team would be unsuccessful!

James 1:22 tells Christians, to “be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” Sometimes we know what we are supposed to do because we know what God’s Word says, but we just decide not to do it. God wants us to read His Word and listen to Him, but if that’s all we do, then we are forgetting the most important part. It’s in “doing what He says” that we let the world know that Jesus loves them, that He died for them, conquered sin and death, and wants a personal relationship with them. So keep listening to God, but make sure you take action as well.

Be a Hero, Run for HERO, Run YAMAHA

Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc. (YMPH) through its President, Mr. Takehsi Yano will make something Different aside from providing the Filipino people with quality motorcycles. YMPH will host Run for Heroes, a run not only intended for serious runners but also for families and friends. Part of the proceeds from the race will go to Help Educate and Rear Orphans (HERO) Foundation, an Ayala Group initiative. The foundation provides an education support for the children of soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines who died or permanently incapacitated in the line of duty.

Yesterday, 26 May 2011, YMPH and Runrio launched the project in a bloggers’ and media night held at the Yamaha Y Zone Shop at the Ortigas Center in Pasig City. In his welcome speech, Mr. Yano emphasized on the need of a healthy lifestyle for everyone, and at the same time making something Different for the community. Coach Rio and Sir Angelo of Runrio presented to the attendees the new and exciting route for the runners of different categories (3-5-10-21K). Representatives from the HERO Foundation likewise gladly appreciated and thanked YMPH for their advocacy and support. To make the event more Different, YMPH also announced that it will contribute 1M pesos to the foundation should the targeted 10,000 runners will be met.

So what are you waiting for? Be a Hero, Run for HERO, Run YAMAHA!
Registration for the Yamaha Run for the Heroes starts on May 30. Be part of the 10,000 runners!

Has the fire and enthusiasm in running and blogging gone?

I knew running as a sport has been in the country for a long time but I’m glad to have been part of the great resurgence two to three years ago. I found a new interest in running three years ago when you can still keep track of all the races held in Metro Manila. There were only one or two races then, held every month. But things have drastically changed over the years with the emergence of running blogs that ignited the fire and enjoined everyone to jump on the bandwagon of road races. I myself has been bitten by the bug so to speak. Today, simultaneous races are happening not only on Sundays but even on Saturdays. But has the fire and enthusiasm of runners to run and blog gone?

What I have noticed lately is that blogs now serve as venues for advertisements, promotions, contests and inspirational articles are now commonly relegated to a simple race recap. I have nothing against this type of blogging. I too have been promoting races, injecting advertisements on this site. But I have been missing those inspiring articles by other bloggers that encourage others to run and go beyond their limits, challenging everyone to level up in distance races. This was what pushed me to strive hard, train hard and finish my first 10K race, 10 miler, half marathon and finally a full marathon. The exchanges of comments, reactions and even gatherings of bloggers added to the fun and excitement of running a road race. Yes, the numbers of runners in races today have significantly increased since then, but I have been missing those runners whom I get to know in races and blogs that in one way or another have influenced me to run. I hope you’re still running, or has the fire in you to run already died out? Or could it be that most of you have embarked into a greater challenge of ultra-running (road or trail) or multi-sports (duathlon, aquathlon, triathlon). If so, then good for you and I salute you for taking up the challenge.

But I still hope to read more encouraging stories, motivational articles and inspiring thoughts in my favorite running blogs and rekindle the fire to run and finish the race we have started. I too will try my best to do my share. See you on the road!

Gold for Goldilocks

Tired but not wasted, that’s how we described our Golidlocks 21K run. We were never race-active for quite some time. Last Sunday’s race was my longest since Run for Home 15K, and Condura 42K (for Swthrt). The Run to Build 3K experience( a week prior to Goldilocks’) was very helpful tune-up run for us. Days before the 21K, Swthrt and I decided to treat this as our LSD run. We have to condition our mind to keep a steady pace all throughout the race. In the past, we often fall into the trap of a fast start that would render us wasted in the latter part of the race. This time, it was an enjoyable run for Team JRunning!

The Race
We arrived early at the venue to make sure that we will have enough time to warm up. When we enter the coral, we saw familiar faces of friends like Mariel, Bards, Vener and Xty, Jet, Rod. Fireworks welcomed runners celebrating Goldilocks 45th Anniversary and soon after we were off to a good start. Though it was really tempting to run fast in the early stage we managed to hold on to our projected pace. Swthrt and I constantly reminded one another of our goal which was to train ourselves to run at a constant pace as possible all throughout the race. The run around Bonifacio was good except that I found the new route having too many turns and U-turns. With the huge number of runners participating, the road seemed too narrow and runners crowded especially on U-turn points. It was already getting hotter by the time we approached the Kalayaan flyover going to Buendia Ave.. The gun start could have been earlier to spare the runners from the summer heat. I think the 5:15am start was a bit late. The Buendia leg of the race was another good run as we continue to be steady on our pace with some walk breaks. Marshals and traffic enforcers were effectively doing their jobs at every road intersection. Water was abundant in long tables positioned strategically. The return bout with the Kalayaan flyover was more challenging with the intense heat zapping every runner’s energy. With a few more kilometers, turns, u-turns and impending leg cramps going to the finish line, Swthrt and I were enjoying our run. We successfully finished our goal for the day and it was great!

Run to Build Buddy Run

It was our first race in Ortigas Area, at the Tiendesitas which was held last Saturday, 07 May 2011. Team JRunning registered in the 3K -Agape Run (buddy run) and found the race enjoyable. Since it was always hard for us to run the first 3- 5Km since we seldom join short distance events, Swthrt and I went to the venue early to have a good warm up run before the race. It was surprising to see Kenyans and Pinoy elite runners into the race. I was not aware of the pot money at stake but it seems that it was of considerable amount to entice elites.

Though we run for fitness, we now seldom join races, and this run served its purpose for us to have again the feel and excitement of joining races. The buddy run is tailor-fit for us since we have been running together at pace with each other in almost all the races. We also love seeing couples running together whether they are love partners, father and son, mother and daughter or simply just friends. It was also great to see and chat with friends like Jun and Mariel (Solemates) and Vima who were busy with their task in organizing the race, and other friends who were church members of CCF.

Congratulations to Runrio! We hope that this will not be our only race in the Ortigas area. To CCF, may you continue share Christ and his good news of salvation to others, God bless!

Our next race, Goldilocks 21K…. see you there!

Back in races for Team JRunning

After our major race last February, the Condura Skyway Marathon, we have only joined two other races, the Globe Run for Home -15K and Takbuhang Pisay 5K Fun Run at our son’s school. Our family vacation in Singapore was also great chance to explore the place through running. Though we have not joined any races there, we have run several times around Bukit Panjang. Photos were posted in this blog and at Team JRunning facebook page. It was indeed a wonderful experience to run in other places. We just hope that we could join a race at Singapore sometime. How about the Runrio Series International? Calling on coach Rio….

Summer vacation for kids also allowed us to run on mornings before going to our respective offices. To be focused on training, Swthrt and I decided to join the Runrio Series Goldilocks Fun Run - 21K on 22 May 2011. Though we don’t expect to break our PRs, this race will serve as part of our training perhaps on another full marathon race as there are several marathons scheduled on the second half of the year.

But before the Goldilocks’ race, we have a last minute decision of joining the Run to Build Race at Tiendesitas. It will be our first race at the Ortigas area. We intended to join the 10K category but registration is already closed as told to me by the Runrio staff at RUNNR. We just opted to make it a real fun run by joining the Agape 3K category, a buddy run (2 people will run together and must finish together) instead.

We hope these two races would spike up our training to bring us back in tip-top shape for our next marathon or ultramarathon as the case may be.
