BLUE SKIES

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? Psalm 121:1

There is nothing like going to an athletic event outside under with Blue Skies. In North Carolina we call them Carolina Blue Skies. I guess that is what most UNC fans think. When I think of blue sky, I think of the verse that says, “I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from?” (Psalm 121:1).

I am amazed at how a blue sky can set the mood for how someone feels. Those cloudy, rainy days may be a little discouraging or make our spirit feel down, but again remember to lift up your eyes. It does not matter if the sun is shining outside or not, the key is the Son shining inside. As we follow athletics, we will sometimes be up and sometimes be down because of wins and losses. But look up—maybe at a Carolina Blue Sky day or a Blue Sky wherever you live—and let that help you remember that your help comes from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The CamSur Marathon

Since I have ran a couple of marathons, any news of race regarding the full distance makes me excited. The invitation I received from the organizers of the CamSur Marathon for a press conference made me even more excited. With the successful CamSur Ironman 70.3 last year held at the same venue and the full support of Gov. Lray Villafuerte there is no doubt in my mind that this year’s Camsur Marathon will be a great event for runners. I was set to attend the presscon and confirmed my attendance but to some unavoidable circumstances at work I missed it. Anyway, I’m sure runners/bloggers (Jazzrunner; Running Diva) who have attended the event have already posted what have transpired and what to expect for another spectacular marathon event in the country. OCAI Run - Updates and Race Routes

Ortigas Center warms up for first ever road run*

Running enthusiasts will be psyched to learn that they will be able to sprint through the wide and hilly avenues of Ortigas Center come June 27, 2010. Thanks to the Ortigas Center Association, Inc. (OCAI), a non-stock, non-profit organization commissioned to uphold the stature of Ortigas Center as one of the nation’s prime business districts, the very first OCAI Run will have its gun start at 5:00am for 10k runners, 5:15am for 5k runners and 5:30am for 3k runners in front of the Philippine Stock Exchange in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

But this won’t be your usual, pardon the pun, run-of-the-mill race. What makes this different from the myriad fun runs that dominate the country’s fitness calendars these days is the location. “Never before has Ortigas Center hosted a run before,” said race director Rudy Biscocho. “Due to the elevation in and around the Ortigas Center area, there will be uphill stretches guaranteed to test your mettle,” he teased. “But naturally, for every uphill climb there is a reward, and you can improve you time by increasing your pace downhill,” explained Biscocho.

The 10k route will feature a downhill trek on Lanuza Drive in Valle Verde and an uphill stretch on Julia Vargas Avenue. The 3k and 5k races will be a more casual breeze within the Ortigas Center.

“This first ever road run in Ortigas Center aims to accomplish the goals of the Rotary Club of Ortigas Center and Balance Lifestyle Fitness,” said Luz N. Cotoco, Chairman of OCAI. “It is also for the benefit of the various humanitarian projects of RCOC,” added Cotoco.

Registration fee is Php 400 for any of the three distances which is inclusive of one race bib, baller band, route map, finisher shirt and loot bag that will be given out right after the run. All proceeds of the OCAI Run will go to the humanitarian projects of the Rotary Club of Ortigas Center. Registration period is from April 30 to June 23, 2010, at all Mizuno outlets and at OCAI Office until June 26. Many raffle prizes including a Technomarine watch and giveaways await lucky participants, while cash prizes will be given to the top 3 finishers of each category.

For inquiries call 890-4230 and 0922-8367990 and look for Ms Ana Salas. Or check out their Facebook page by searching for “OCAI Run”. The OCAI Run is organized by OCAI with RCOC, presented by the Ortigas & Company Limited Partnership and sponsored by HSBC, Meralco, Puregold, The San Miguel Corporation, First Holdings, Flanax, Xenical, The Oriental Assurance Corporation, BusinessWorld, CCI Enterprises, SM Megamall, Robinsons Department Store, Unilever and Ropali.

TAKE ACTION

“Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” James 1:22

Coaches are teachers. Their job is to instruct players. Great coaches work hard to prepare their players for competition. They study their opponent, and come up with a game plan to produce the best possible outcome. Great coaches are constantly looking for ways to improve. But for all the hard work and effort great coaches give, it’s meaningless if their athletes don’t respond.

Imagine a coach doing his or her best to teach the team, prepare them for competition and then once the athletes got in the game, they all decided not to do what they had been taught. The coach would be upset and the team would be unsuccessful!

James 1:22 tells Christians, to “be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” Sometimes we know what we are supposed to do because we know what God’s Word says, but we just decide not to do it. God wants us to read His Word and listen to Him, but if that’s all we do, then we are forgetting the most important part. It’s in “doing what He says” that we let the world know that Jesus loves them, that He died for them, conquered sin and death, and wants a personal relationship with them. So keep listening to God, but make sure you take action as well.

Back on the road again after a marathon

Running a marathon really beats you up not only on race day but also during training. After the TBR Dream Marathon last May 22, Swthrt and I have decided to take a break from running and give our bodies (especially those legs) the time to heal. I personally felt some back pains for a couple of days after the race which I haven’t felt during my first marathon. Anyway, I’m feeling better now and had our first 10K run after almost two weeks break, last Friday, June 4 at Batangas City. We had to go there for the first death anniversary (which is June 3) of Swthrt’s father. We ran our usual route from Baranggay Tulo to Baranggay San Isidro. We took it easy and ran at a very comfortable pace which allowed us to finish the run in 1 hour and 17 minutes. After which, we had a sumptuous breakfast at Ed’s (Swthrt’s brother) house in Avida San Isidro before getting back at Swthrt’s place.

Heart Rate Monitor used
Our run also gave me the chance to use the Polar Fs1 heart monitor courtesy of my cousin Noel. He’s in the US and upon learning that I’m into running, he decided to send me a heart rate monitor to complement my training. Actually, I really don’t know how to use it effectively to enhance my training. I’m into research now on how to maximize the benefits of using one. As in any other running gadgets, it has its advantages and disadvantages. But for now, I’m really thankful and blessed to have families supporting us in our new found interest. So anyone who want to know my shoe size?

Looking for a workable training program
Since school year was about to start, we are looking for a workable training program that will suit our schedule. Our youngest son’s class is at 6:40am which negate the possibility of a very early morning run during weekdays. The only possible time for us to run is in the afternoon or evening. Hopefully it will not rain as much especially on times we are available to run. Also, the time to check on the kids’ school lessons and attend to their schooling needs would certainly eat up more time. Well, I guess we really have to learn how to squeeze in a quick run from now on. See you guys on the road!
