Running with pain

Our Tuesday evening run was not as good as we wanted it to be. We arrived at UP at around 6:30 pm. We usually start our warm-up run from Abelardo Hall to the parking lot in front of Palma Hall before we proceed to our stretching. Afterwards, we continued our run and upon reaching the Sunken Garden area, Swthrt felt an uncomfortable pain on her knees and shins. These pains have been bothering her for the past couple of runs we had. We actually didn’t know what’s the culprit. Is it because of the shoes? Is she wearing the right type of shoes for her type of foot? Or is it her running form? Because of this inconvenience, I suggested that we just do slow interval walks and runs so as not to give more pressure on her knees and shins. We did it for our goal of two rounds at the academic oval. Just before finishing the second round, Swthrt told me that she still wanted to walk for another round for a total of 3 rounds. Swthrt really wanted to run the Milo Finals this weekend and quite worried that the pains might prevent her. We hope to hear from you runners on what we should do regarding Swthrt’s recurring pains in knees and shins. We need your suggestions, guys.

  1. I think shin/knee pains are very common as your mileage starts increasing, I experienced them myself a few months ago.

What worked for me was stretching the shins - before and after the run. I also saw this video on runner's world where you would walk on tiptoe backwards and on your heels forward. Do a lot of stretching for the hamstrings too. This assumes of course that you already have the proper shoes that provide the appropriate support.

    Good luck and stay injury-free!

  2. Hi BroJ. Not a doctor here but I have some suggestions. If you live close to either New Balance - Glorietta or New Balance - Shangri-la, you might want to stop by and have the sales associates do a gait analysis with Swthrt. Philip (foreignrunner) in a recent post on my site mentioned Anthony (NB Shangri-la) as a very good person regarding shoe selection.

Several things to check are the shoes (wear pattern), surface that she's running on and the type of shoe. If she has a flat foot, a cushion (neutral) shoe is not good for her since a flat foot will cause the arch collapse in. This is called pronation. The running form could be a possibility as well. I could suggest a number of people such as Baldrunner and his staff (hope he doesn't mind) or Coach Rio and his staff (hope he doesn't mind).

In the meantime, after any future runs, I would suggest ice in the shin area for a few minutes. Sorry about the long post here but I hope this helps a little bit. Please take care.

  3. Milo is still a few days away. Use R.I.C.E. - rest, ice, compress, elevate on the shins. And yes, maybe try to check the shoes.

And on the Milo, maybe take it easy on the first few kilometers.

    Wishing Swthrt a fast recovery.

  5. Hi Dindo, thanks on this one, i think our stretching were not enough. We also sometimes skip on the stretching after a run.

Hi Wayne, thanks, we will visit the New balance store at Shangrila.

Jinoe, thank you very much for the concern. See you at Milo!

Sir jovie, thanks, we will try very hard to be at ULTRA this Friday. We appreciate the offer.

Thank you very much to all your suggestions and concerns. God bless you!

  6. Have you tried ice compress on the injured area Bro J? It works for me so I hope it also works for Baby. What distance is she running this Sunday? If it still hurts, I strongly suggest she rests first.

  8. Hey Bro J, if you don't know what's the best running shoes for Swthrt, try this site http://www.zappos.com/runningfitguide.zhtml. Although I ran so much mileage, I find time to study more regarding running. We never know, injury is an occurence here. I hope you do the same.

    See you sunday. Best regards.
