A major breakthrough in running technology: Skechers GO Run launched

Skechers Philippines launched last Friday, 27 January, the Skechers Go Run. It’s their new minimalistic lightweight running shoe line that integrates the revolutionary mid-foot strike technology. Skechers USA Inc., one of the global leaders in the footwear industry found this opportune time to expand their market base and introduce a new line of performance running shoes. Frankly, I have known Skechers as maker of fashionable footwear and was quite surprised of its latest product line of performance running shoes such as the Pro Speed and now the Go Run model. I was fortunate to be invited to the launching of the new Skechers Go Run and found out the amazing innovations of the new line particularly in the mid-foot technology.

The technology is designed to enhance the natural running performance of runners by positioning the body for an efficient mid-foot strike, thus reducing the impact of heel striking. Heel striking is very common among runners. I myself is a heel striker and often felt tensions and pain in my knees.

Ms. Bernice Bobadilla, Marketing Manager of Skechers

Michelle Estuar presented the Skechers GO Run and mid-foot technology

bloggers and guests

listening to the presentation

The Skechers GO Run will make it easier to move from heel striking to mid-foot striking which would lessen impact on the knee as presented by Michelle Estuar, Skecher Philippines ambassadress.  The Skechers Go Run weighs only 6.9 ounces (based on men's size 9). It also flexes and twist responsively, giving the feet freedom to move comfortably. It has the Go Impulse sensors for enhanced sensory feedback. Strategically positioned on the outsole of the shoe where the impact points are greatest, Skechers Go Impulse sensors move together and independently to provide sensory feedback to the brain. In turn, this allows the runners to feel the pressure and quickly react on the ground.

The event was attended by bloggers/runners at the Skechers store in Market Market in Taguig City. It was a good thing that I came and saw the presentation of Michelle as I was planning to replace my running shoe. I am now bent on trying the new technology and as Michelle said it’s not too late (or old, he he) to shift from a heel striker to mid-foot striker and be efficient in running.

bloggers/runners strike a pose

After the presentation, I left early  because Swthrt and I have to catch up for our church’s prayer meeting.  Bloggers and guests were treated to a dinner and have more activities to launch the Skechers Go Run. Congratulations to Skechers Philippines for the new product line.

MEB KEFLEZIGHI, SKECHERS NEW ENDORSER, ACHIEVES NEW PERSONAL BEST AT 2011 ING NYC MARATHON WEARING SKECHERS GO RUN RACING FOOTWEAR*

SKECHERS USA, Inc., a global leader in the footwear industry announced last August 2011, that it has signed an agreement with distance runner Meb Keflezighi to endorse SKECHERS Fitness performance footwear and apparel in a worldwide multiple-medium marketing campaign.

Elite runner and Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi achieved a new personal best time of 2:09:13 and was the fastest American at the 2011 ING New York City Marathon today. Wearing SKECHERS GO Run racing footwear, Meb surpassed his 2009 New York Marathon winning time of 2:09:15.

"It felt amazing to beat my previous personal best and 2009 winning time. It was an extremely challenging race with very fast and intense competition, and I am pleased with my achievement," began Keflezighi. "I felt strong going into it, training at high altitudes in my SKECHERS GO Run racing shoes, which definitely made a positive impact on my running.  I’ve been a heel strike runner my entire life, but SKECHERS’ mid-foot strike technology has helped me adjust my stride to be more efficient. My shoes are my most essential piece of equipment and right now SKECHERS has the footwear I need to succeed. I’m excited to be partnering with this groundbreaking company.”

SKECHERS GO Run is an innovative new minimalistic lightweight running line featuring revolutionary mid-foot strike technology and GO Impulse sensors for enhanced sensory feedback. Meb has provided SKECHERS with expert insight by testing and consulting on the design of SKECHERS GO Run as well as other high-performance products currently in development.

The GO Run shoe weighs just 5.9 ounces and has a 4mm drop to promote a midfoot strike. Key technical features include a barefoot last that is wider through the ball of the foot with a lower heel drop that moves the center of pressure forward. GO Impulse circular sensors on the outsole are positioned where impact points are greatest and are designed to provide traction, stability and reaction to the terrain. The GO Run also has a SmartShoe curved bottom that promotes natural motion, proprietary Resalyte injection molded cushioning with memory retention, and an OrthoLite anti-microbial sockliner.

Skechers entry into performance running comes at an interesting time as more people are running than ever before and the success of Meb proves the credibility of Skechers GO Run as a line of performance-oriented running shoe.

For hardcore athletes or running hobbyists, this is definitely a good shoe choice to help improve your run. Skechers GO Run—the way you’re supposed to run.

A wonderful time @ Timex Run 2012

The Timex 2012 Run was undoubtedly the most awaited event in the early part of this year. The participation of Timex celebrity endorser Piolo Pascual in the 10K category added up the excitement among runners. With Piolo’s sterling performance in the 2009 Timex Run, many runners aim to hit a sub-Piolo time (that is below 47 min). Timex being one of the leading brands in sports watches and the partnership with Runrio gave runners the best running experience last Sunday.

Our run
Having registered in the 16K category, Swthrt and I arrived at the BGC at around 4:30 am. Since this is a Timex race, I decided on using my first and ever reliable Timex watch to record my time alongside my GPS watch.

GPS watch on my left hand

Timex watch on my right hand

I have been using this watch since I started running in 2008. As always, we wanted just to enjoy every race we participated in. We ran without any problem although tiredness set in the later part of the course. This is our second race of the year and we did not bring our hydration belts because we knew that water and energy drinks were more than enough in every Runrio-organized race. It was also a new 16K route for us although portions of the route are often used for 21K routes. It was another great race for Team JRunning. We officially finished the race in 2:00 flat. Congratulations to Timex and Runrio for another great running experience.

Water welling up to eternal life*

Water or hydration stations during races are very vital. Runners should have enough water to keep them running. Having runners dehydrated will be critical to their health and may even cause their lives. Many articles have been written about the importance of water. The human body’s composition is 70% water. According to research, drinking five or more eight-ounce glasses of water a day could help lower our risk of heart disease by up to 60%. It regulates body temperature, it cushions joints, moistens oxygen for breathing, helps body absorb nutrients and more. Water is essential to life. Just like in our spiritual run, water can be likened to God’s word. It is important that we always hear His voice and understand Him through His word, the Bible. His word will always be our source of strength when we are weak. It will be our comfort when we fall. It is our spring of water of life. Jesus said, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."(John 13-14). How often do we drink from the well of life? Do we desire to learn more of Him by reading the Bible? I’m also guilty of these things and I thank the Lord for reminding me the basic truth about His word through running and blogging. God bless us all!

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
                      Revelation 21:5-7 (New International Version)

Team JRunning @ Go Natural Run 2012

The Go Natural Run was our first race for the year. Swthrt and I were all set for this run, aiming not to beat  personal records but just to start this year’s running right. We arrived at the venue at around 4:30am with enough time to warm up before the gun start. Our goal was to run a constant pace all throughout the race. This would be around 7:00 to 7:30/km pace. When we entered the starting coral, it was nice to see Sir Rene (Jazzrunner) and Vener (Run Unlimited) who will also run in the 21K category. Swthrt and I joined Sir Rene (whom we found later that he was struggling at the start and wanted to stop early in the race). The warm up run must have help. We only stop at water stations strategically located at least every 1.5K along the course. We tried to keep our pace and not intimidated by the runners overtaking us. Our run in the early kilometers was great, until the U turn in Buendia Ave. wherein we slowed down a bit on our way back to BGC. Swthrt also had to ask for liniment for her calf muscles from a volunteer near Makati Ave intersection. Overall, we are very happy with our run. It was a good start to boost training for this running season. Hopefully, this will continue as we prepare for another full marathon this year or possibly our first ultra-marathon.

We finished 2:49:+ gun start time. It was also great to see Dennis (Runningfatboy) and Per after the race.

Next in line is the Timex Run 2012. See you there!

Note: I used my Soleus GPS watch in this race and registered a total distance of 22.3K. We averaged 7:35 in our pace. I just wanted to know if Garmin users (you may post comments) got the same distance reading because I read in some reviews on this watch that discrepancy in the distance record is evident in longer distances. I have tested it in shorter distances and got fairly accurate results( please see my previous post).

A time with Timex, Coach Rio and Piolo

Having missed the first edition of the Timex Run in 2009, Team JRunning made sure that we’re registered in this year’s Timex Run.

Last Friday, January 13, Timex launched its Timex Run 2012: Time is Running at Café La Carmela along Jupiter Street in Makati. . The event was graced by no other than their celebrity endorser Piolo Pascual. I was fortunate to be invited together with other bloggers/runners and members of the media. We were given the chance to ask questions to Piolo and to Coach Rio regarding the upcoming event. Everyone must have been really impressed on how Piolo was able to squeeze in training with his very hectic schedules. He also shared his experiences and goals in running. After trying out the half marathon distance he is now aiming to run his first full marathon in Berlin this year. Piolo is currently training under Coach Jojo Macalintal.

Some of the bloggers present in the event

It can be recalled that in the first Timex Run in 2009, Piolo set a remarkable performance by running a sub-50 in the 10K distance category thereby urging other runners to beat it. This brought about the term sub-piolo. This time, we are quite sure that he would give his best as he had always did in whatever endeavor he is into.

Bounce forward as you push off with the Skechers ProSpeed SRR running shoes

Running has become a national pastime in the Philippines. Weekend warriors who used to jog around Greenhills and then find themselves in surrounding coffee shops after their run, now find themselves in the streets of Bonifacio Global City or the paved roads around Mall of Asia in sponsored Sunday runs.
As more and more people take to the streets to pound the pavement, there emerged a resurgence of interest in the right footwear to use as you see people in these runs wearing a variety of shoes from normal street rubber shoes to technical running shoes that offer a myriad of benefits.
This has led to the development and introduction of a new kind of lightweight running shoe from Skechers for active enthusiasts and serious athletes --- the Skechers ProSpeed SRR.
Chinggay Andrada, one of the trainers in the Biggest Loser Philippines show and a certified professional fitness expert; and Skechers Philippines newest fitness spokesperson said: “This new footwear technology by Skechers will greatly help in getting more Filipinos to run more comfortably and efficiently whether they’re taking on their first 3K or training for a marathon.”
The ProSpeed SRR features the patented Smart Shoe™ Technology, the rocker-bottom that guides runners into mid-foot strike position. This mid-foot strike design transforms the energy of impact, through the Kinetic Return System, into forward motion with every stride.
“The shoes literally give runners a spring in their step as they feel a distinctive bounce forward upon toe-off or push off,” Andrada adds.
The Skechers ProSpeed SRR is also lightweight due to the Resalyte™ cushioning with memory retention that reduces impact for a supported, comfortable ride during runs. Each ProSpeed comes in just under 10 oz. per shoe depending on the size.
Check out www.skechers.com.ph and www.facebook.com/skechersfitnessphilippines for more information on ProSpeed SRR.

My first GPS watch

2011  was a good year for Team JRunning. We have ran a full marathon during the Condura Skyway Marathon, a 32K at RU3, several half marathons and a couple of fun runs. As an incentive and to motivate myself to train harder this year, I rewarded myself  a Soleus GPS 1.0, my first GPS watch. Because of the demand for efficient, reliable and affordable watch that would cater the needs of serious runners, Soleus introduced to the market its new GPS watch. The price is affordable and it comes with the basic features every runner needs in a GPS watch.

I bought mine last month but have not yet fully tested it since until last weekend. Last Saturday, Swthrt and I began our training for this year’s running season. The Soleus GPS watch registered accurate data in terms of distance measurement. It registered an almost identical measurement of the route we took regularly which I measured using a car’s odometer and Google Earth (1.8K). It was a good buy since we can now run any route, and at the end, we would know how far we have run for the day. Yesterday, our second test run was as satisfying as the first one. We ran 10K at the BGC.

Other features I find interesting is the auto lap which records your lap time as set by the user from 0.5, 1,2,3,4 or 5K intervals. The run data feature was very helpful for runners who want to track down their training performances though it is not downloadable to a computer. Just a word of caution, be careful in viewing your run data files as you might accidentally delete all the files just like what happened to me last night. I wanted to tabulate our run data and as I navigate through the watch buttons, I accidentally deleted all the run data files. It is a must that you get familiar with the buttons of the watch. I was also cautioned by the sales representative at the Time Studio that it cannot be used under raining conditions. This I would really like to verify as to how hard the rainfall should be that I cannot use it.

Overall, I was glad to have bought the Soleus GPS watch and hope to have more enjoyable run with it!

Media Release from the organizers:

Just last December 16, 2011, Tropical Storm Sendong (with and international name of Washi) took Mindanao by surprise and ravaged it with flash floods and landslides that left Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City in deep devastating disaster. According to Red Cross, the deaths have already reached 917. Most of them were asleep in the middle of the night on that fateful day when raging floodwaters crushed their homes from rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes, following 12 straight hours of heavy rains in Mindanao. Drowning has been identified as the main cause of death. Typhoon Sendong affected 29 municipalities, 278 barangays and 53,240 families (161,437 persons), with 1,194 injured and 636 still reported missing. 24,681 houses were totally or partially damaged and there are still 39,414 persons housed in evacuation centers to date.

We all agree that a child is a gift from God, and we are certain that Rafael Carlos is heaven sent to his parents, Richard and Cecilia. He was born last August 22, 2011, three months shy from his due and he stayed in the hospital since then. Because of much needed medication for him to survive, it causes a tremendous rise on the hospital bills in which his parents are now struggling to pay for. Richard, a runner, is the only one working while Cecilia is taking care of Baby Rafael Carlos. A total of Php200,000 has already been paid, but Right now, Baby Rafael Carlos is still at Pediatric ICU. Let us complete God’s gift to Richard and Cecilia by helping them pay for their dues so they can take Baby Rafael Carlos home.

As our answer to this call, we organized this event, “Todo Responde Run”. Get your body and your soul fit by running and extending your blessings. With race categories of 3K, 5K and 10K to be staged at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig on January 14, 2012, families and friends can enjoy the route and at the same time, extend their help as well. The proceeds will be fully turned over on the very day of the event to the beneficiaries, in cold cash. 20% to Baby Rafael and 80% for the Sendong Relief Operations handled by ABS-CBN’s Sagip Kapamilya and Philippine Red Cross. 100% of the registration fees will go directly to the beneficiaries, indeed a Run For A Cause.

TODO RESPONDE RUN, the story behind.

Francis Razon of EatPrayRun Sportswear, thru Facebook, made a call to respectable names in our community, to unite and launch a fund raising run event for the Sendong victims and baby Rafael. Great people responded. Michelle Estuar & Renan Morales, Raffy Santos & Edwin Soriano of runnersrunner.com, Raul Acuna of ARC, Rovic Canono of Greentenial, Jonel Mendoza of Front Runner, Jinoe Gavan of Takbo.ph, Jeff Lo of Pinoy Fitness, Team BGC. Running Host Boy Ramos, Tia de Guzman of Pepsquad events and even our Rio Dela Cruz of RUNRIO pledged to help the noble event. Hence, “TODO RESPONDE RUN”. And the chain of support continues to grow. However we are still calling upon other teams, organizers and institutions to be one with us in launching a noble grand event that will raise significant funds for the Sendong Victims and Baby Rafael.

This is OUR race, this is OUR event, this is OUR RUN FOR A CAUSE!
